Blue Hands, Sculpey, wire acrylic paint, and wood, 2018
Katie and the Saints is a series documents an outsider’s fascination and exploration of an individual's domestic life surrounded by iconography. Inspired by seeing inside bedrooms with private arrangements of icons, prayer beads, and crucifixes , Laura began an exploration into living alongside these items. The series forms part of her broader interest in portable shrines and devotional objects. The series is not about ritual in faith or object adoration. The work is about how shapes from one's visual landscape imprint deeply on an individual and contribute a daily reminder of identity and purpose. Laura explores this through mark-making in response to iconographic forms, through reduction and repetition of their shapes, and the creation of playful small sculptures.
